تستخدم an عندما تكون الكلمة التى بعدها تبدا بصوت متحرك
Use the article an when the word that follows starts with a vowel sound. Pay attention not to whether the first letter is actually a vowel or consonant, but what it sounds like:
an optionan hourly wagean elephant; an egg; an apple; an idiot;an orphan
But: a used book (because the u sounds like a y)

Remember, using a or an depends on the sound that begins the next word.
